Bug Description

When enabling the Sidebar extension in Epiphany, there is no immediate functionality thereof. Turning on the Sidebar simply reads "No Sidebars installed" with all options grayed out.

Additionally, there seems to be no documentation in the help file (or, for that matter, on the internet) about what constitutes something to "install" to the Sidebar.

I would propose that some sample sidebars be installed, those that would be useful to Ubuntu users, and that documentation be included to discuss where one could find more Sidebars (or make one's own?).

Thanks for your bug. I've forwarded it upstream: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=337708

Thanks. I guess I could have filed it there if I knew it would be an upstream bug. Sorry about that.

No problem. Every bug which is not a packaging one or a distro specific configuration is an upstream one. The default configuration point apply to upstream too

As pointed upstream:

"Documentation for this extension was added in 2.14.1 (Help->Extensions) . It
explains what sidebars are, where to find them, and how to install ."

marking as fixed, feel free to reopen if you think that's not enough

I think that Ubuntu should come with some installed by default. I'm willing to discuss ideas (wiki? ubuntu-devel?) and volunteer to create some if that would help get them in the package.

I can follow documentation as well as anyone, but when I saw that there were no sidebars installed, I honestly gave up on finding out anything else. I think a little extra love from us Ubuntu folks would be icing on the cake.

If you want to work on that you are welcome. Setting priority to low because the desktop team has others bugs to fix first and will not work on that one now, we will review patches though ;) Feel free to discuss it on the ubuntu-desktop mailing list if you want. Other way you can comment on that bug but that's not really a place for open discussion rather for discussing patches or changes to do

I'm trying to work on this, but time is short. (I think I'm not the only one saying that this week. :P)

What would be preferred? I'm thinking that a search sidebar (e.g. Google's) would be a good start, but also maybe a specific Ubuntu one would be good? I'm not sure what would be desired in that respect, but I'd be open to setting it up.

Do you have some URL to an example of sidebar you think that would be nice?

Well, the link I was thinking of from DMOZ is as follows:
javascript:window.sidebar.addPanel('Google','http://www.google.com/mozilla/google.xul','')

But I was also (more preferably) thinking of one that would incorporate searching for the Ubuntu wiki, and maybe some other sort of introductory text maybe?

Sort of like a default go-to source for users (new and familiar alike) in their browser.

a google bar and an ubuntu bar looks like good ideas for that

Revisiting this a few weeks later: I had some time to fiddle with the Google sidebar, but it turns out I'm not a very good JS hacker. :( Could we add the default Google sidebar for now and maybe I (or anyone else) could work on getting a nice Ubuntu one worked up down the road, i.e. before Edgy's release?

We might look at that during the edgy cycle, depending on how busy people are

This bug should be reopened. The "link" in Help|Extensions|Sidebar goes somewhere other than it should and there is no information on where else you can find information.

"http://dmoz.org/Netscape/Sidebar/" is not the proper link.

Thank you!
