Bug Description

On Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10 and 9.04, when Ubuntu is set on a language different than English, the Firefox startpage links :
- Ubuntu Help
- Participate
- Ubuntu Shop
redirect to English webpages.

And the Google search gives English webpages results.

That's very unpleasant for non-English speaking users (majority of Ubuntu's users ? i don't know statistics about this).

Thank you for your message.

I think you should ask every LoCo team which link they think are best to replace the 3 English ones.
For example at ubuntu-fr, we created this full-French start-page for our localized live-CD : http://start.ubuntu-fr.org/9.10/

It would be nice also to localize the Google results. (but I don't know if it is possible, we did not manage on our start-page).

duplicate status is wrong, as bug #363381 only talks about search results. This one here talks about Help, Participate, ans Shop links.

summary: - Firefox startpage links not translated/localized
+ Firefox startpage links (Help, Participate, and Shop) not
+ translated/localized

HI YannUbuntu,

There is an ongoing effort for providing links from local resources from the www.ubuntu.com

Still, this bug is not due to ubufox package and the Ubuntu Start Page team can not link to localized version of Ubuntu Shop, Ubuntu Help and Ubuntu Participate since they don't exists.

The "Participate" or "Community' or any www.ubuntu.com will not be translated... so this is Won't fix

For the Ubuntu Shop, you should file a bug to the Ubuntu Shop project... but I am not sure if we have one and I am not sure if this is going to happen soon.... this can also mean Won't fix

There are plans for providing a translated version of help.ubuntu.com ... but until this is done, we can not link it from the Ubuntu start page.

For now, this bug will not be fixed in Ubuntu Start page.

If you want to help with the translation of help.ubuntu.com, please get in touch with the Ubuntu Documentation team.

Cheers

Thank for your answer.

"Participate or Community or any www.ubuntu.com will not be translated" : do you mean there won't be any www.ubuntu.com/fr/ for example? is it confirmed by Canonical ?

There is a way to fix it:

As English resources are useless for non-English speakers, what about Ubuntu-start-page using LoCo website links when they exist ? (and English links by default when the localized link does not exist)

For example:
"Participate" has a French equivalent : http://www.ubuntu-fr.org/contribuer-ubuntu-fr
"Community" has a French equivalent : http://www.ubuntu-fr.org/
"Shop" has a French equivalent : http://enventelibre.org/ubuntufr

For example, if www.ubuntu-es.org/ does not have Spanish shop, we would leave the English link.

What do you think about this idea?

Hi,

Linking to LoCo resources is discussed on the Ubuntu website mailing list (https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/Ubuntu-website)

Here is the initial announcement for the Ubuntu.com Website Localization Project

https://lists.canonical.com/archives/ubuntu-website/2010-March/000856.html

I guess it is better to continue our discuss on the on the Ubuntu website mailing list :)
