Bug Description

There are a huge number of different environment parameters that affects the way the users want their results when searching, like: screen-size, network bandwidth and other details.
Launchpad should allow the users to configure the batching system individually according their needs. Basically they can modify a bunch of attributes in direction to have optimized navigating when searching in LP as:

 * number of presented results:
 * number of result pages (chunks) directly linked at the bottom of the page
 * always search launchpad-wide
 * present extendent information about the results

Many other parameter might be introduced depending of the complexity of the Search widget (see bug # 3944)

We need to avoid the possibility that users will choose a huge batch size that will cause timeouts.

Does one batch size fit all?

Not really, the size is the most important, it should be fine-tuned by the user and not defined by application. Sometimes, people prefer large chunks of results rather than many requests (CTRL-F can be handy).
IMHO, timeouts are a holistic problem and should not restrict the search functionality at all, but I do understand it's a limit-factor atm and I believe it must be sorted out if we want to offer useful search.
