(e.g. If I set to print in draft mode and in grayscale it continues to print in normal mode and with colors)

I think the problem is the communication between evince and CUPS.Cause CUPS works well in any case. Adobe Reader seems to "feel" the changes in configuration made by gnome-cups-manager.Even if I think the problem is in that package because if I enter CUPS by localhost:631 I found that the configuration is not in pair with gnome-cups-manager.

Do any other GNOME programs (e.g. gedit) exhibit this problem?

I don't know because I use pdf a lot so a use evince or Adobe Reader.Adobe Reader prints with the choosen configuration and also Open Office, but evince not. Moreover evince doesn't print more pages per sheet as it should. It should be checked the interaction of evince with CUPS and gnome-cups-manager.The problem is there!

Can you see if you can cause this problem with the default image viewer ( eog ) ? The easiest way to do so is to find an image, press the right mouse button and select Open With "Image Viewer" (In the Help -> About box it will say it is Eye of GNOME 2.14.1)

the problem isn't with evince itself, it's with libgnomeprint... gedit, evince, you name it: all gnome apps relying on that lib are affected by this issue. Cups-gnome-manager works ok, problem is, the .lpoptions file gets ignored by the library.

Ok, maybe then someone with the appropiate rights should mark this bug a duplicate with Bug #44469.

Punting to libgnomeprint based on comments and duplicates.

bertoldic:

It would be REALLY helpful if you can confirm you see this problem with at least one other GNOME program (e.g. gedit, eog, evolution, epiphany)...

Gimp does not follow instructions either (in gnome). On my Canon IP4000, if you select things like lower tray it ignores that and simply prints on the upper tray (this works correctly under kde BTW). On evolution something different happens, select duplex and that is ignored, landscape and it prints landscape - but in the middle of a portrait page. It has 'button select' selected and observes that (whereas on the gimp it always uses upper tray).

I can confirm this on HP Deskjet 6840.
Printing from evince, gedit, evolution is not recognizing the activated duplex. If it is activated through CUPS Webinterface duplex is working in these apps too.
So it must be a problem with communication between cups and gnome-print.

I'm also experiencing printing problems in all GNOME applications when trying to print to an HP LaserJet 4050 printer with 4 trays and the PostScript printer driver: the GNOME print dialog won't allow me to choose the tray since the tray dropdown list appears grayed out.

It seems to be a GNOME-specific problem since OpenOffice.org and all KDE applications work fine.

Dirk:

GIMP is a special case and does not use libgnomeprint . GIMP printing problems will mostly likely need to go into a bug of their own.
