Looks to me like gnome-settings-daemon has died. I won't be able to check that until later though - could you please check from a console if gnome-settings-daemon is still running after you've triggered this behaviour?

Thanks

gnome-settings-daemon is running:

root@macbook:~# ps ax|grep gnome-sett |grep -v grep
 9331 ? Ssl 0:00 /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon
root@macbook:~#

I log out: -> gdm appears with background image ... daemon is still alive

I switch to a tty: -> daemon is still alive

I switch back to gdm: > background gone ... daemon is still alive

I can confirm this bug as well. But, after choose my username and put my password, the gnome desktop don't work. Just appear a xterm, where I can run the commands.

This has nothing to do with this bug ... so ... sorry for OT

You can set a new background picture from the command line (as user root)

sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --set --type string --set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename /data/pictures/Grassy.jpg

yes I know but newbie people wouldn't know how to do it, we need a GUI option in gdmsetup

Not that this would solve the issue, but I think quite a few configuration features were removed from the GUI in karmic.
