Bug Description

Sound: VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller

Update 2: No sound now since I updated to kernel 2.6.15. See bug report #36089.

Update: I forgot I had another step to do. I opened the sound volume master in toolbar and found the speakers were turned off. I turned them on. Then went to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and commented out the penultimate line. I have sound again. However, I have two questions.

1) Why are the speakers shut off in the master volume control in the tool bar?

2) Why to have sound does the penultimate line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base need to be commented out?
 (Look below to see what I did.)
_______________________________________________________________
I had sound with Dapper Alpha after I commented the penultimate line in /ect/modprobe.d/alsa-base. (See Below)

# Load saa7134-alsa instead of saa7134 (which gets dragged in by it anyway)
install saa7134 modprobe --ignore-install saa7134 $CMDLINE_OPTS && { modprobe -Qb saa7134-alsa ; : ; }
# Prevent abnormal drivers from grabbing index 0
options snd-bt87x index=-2
options snd-atiixp-modem index=-2
# options snd-intel8x0m index=-2
options snd-via82xx-modem index=-0

Thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=160576

However, in Dapper Beta, I have no sound at all.

@sef: This bug report is entirely confusing. Are you using current Dapper with the 2.6.15-25.43 kernel? Bug 36089 was rejected since it appeared to no longer be relevant. What precisely is the issue here?

(Also, please don't paste entire dmesg output as a comment, as it really kills the readability of this report. Instead, attach it. Thanks.)

Attach the output from ``lsmod && lspci -v && cat /proc/asound/cards && amixer''.

Changed in linux-source-2.6.15:
importance: Untriaged → Low
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info
