Bug Description

Installing Ubuntu from CD hangs when configuring libgstreamer

The following was produced by aptitude when trying to load the packages manually (I am a relative novice)

Setting up libstreamer0.8-0 (0.8.11-1ubuntu1) ...
OIL: ERROR liboiltest.c 247: (): illegal instruction in idct8x8_s16_mmx
OIL: ERROR liboiltest.c 247: (): illegal instruction in idct8x8_s16_mmx
Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file

Several other people appear to have the same problem.
The machine is an excellent venerable HP Vectra with a pentium II and a graphics card and not much else on board.

Thanks

Thanks for your bug report. Were you trying to install Breezy or Dapper? This looks more like a Breezy installation to me, so it'd be nice if you could try the Dapper CD (maybe just the LiveCD) and report back, as their have been a bunch of improvements to liboil in the meantime.

Daniel

It was Breezy. I'm not familiar with Dapper.

I also cut the Breezy Live CD which worked on the machine. I notice that the
libgstreamer stuff does not appear to be on the Live CD.

How do I get hold of the appropriate version of Dapper?

many thanks for the help.

Daniel

Found Dapper beta and loaded it. It appears to work. If I use the beta, will
there be problems in moving to the release due in June?

many thanks for the help.

I have the same problem, but only after upgrading from Breezy to Dapper a few months ago. The most anoying thing is when starting gnome, gnome-setting-daemon keeps on restarting thus changing the the theme as fast as it can. For now I just renamed liboil-0.3.so.0*. No more problem exept that every gstreamer apps does not work.

Here's the output of running totem on the command line:
OIL: ERROR liboiltest.c 359: oil_test_check_impl(): illegal instruction in mt19937_i386_mmx_3
Illegal instruction

Output of gnome-setting-daemon:
OIL: ERROR liboiltest.c 359: oil_test_check_impl(): illegal instruction in mt19937_i386_mmx_3
Illegal instruction

I tryed installing older version from debian, same problem. I tryed recompiling the .deb, same problem. I traced in liboil, found the code that does the illegal instruction, but did not want to start debuging assembly, so I stopped there.

I'll find that function again and will post it, but for now I must get to work.

Here's a post on a french forum where a bunch of other people have the same problem:
