Bug Description

Hi,

I would like to request that fixing the acerhdf fan driver for Acer Aspire One AOA150 (those that ship with an HD) models be considered for sauce in karmic.

The current state of the driver is that it (apparently) works on AOA110 models (those that ship with a SSD), but on my AOA150 causes weird pulsing behaviour from the fan. I have tested using the standalone source tarball for the driver to compile a new module into /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/updates, and the updated acerhdf 0.5.16 as currently being considered for 2.6.32 solves the problem.

The diff is fairly simple, consisting primarily of enhancing the tables of numerical BIOS commands to include new values.

Kernel patchwork:
http://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/39701/

Git changeset:
f0c28100d3d83ecdfc225be00ad341c0d40d9837
in:
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/lenb/linux-acpi-2.6
on branch:
test

Potential for regressions is minimal, as the acerhdf driver is new in karmic, and does not work in a useful way on AOA150 hardware without this patch.

Just trying this today on AO150 and I still get the weird pulsing behaviour with linux version 2.6.31.11.22. Fan comes on for a couple of seconds and then goes of for about 5 and then the cycle continues.

I can confirm that the pulsing behavior on the AOA150 still exists using 2.6.31-14, exactly as John Green describes in the previous note. The fix doesn't seem to be working.

Forgive my ignorance-- does this mean this bug's status should be changed?

Hi Scott, John,

As the original reporter, I confirm that acerhdf in current Karmic is working fine for me. Therefore, whatever causes it not to work for you must be a subtly different issue, and therefore deserves a new separate bug.

Specifically, I'm using an AOA150 with BIOS v.3308. It would be useful if in the bug you file you include the precise version of your BIOS.

I updated the bios to the latest (3310) and this now no longer happens. I don't know if the bios update fixed it or if a kernel update a few days ago was the cure. But whichever way I'm now good.

Thank you for your replies. I updated to 3310 (I thought I had updated recently, but found I was using 3114), and it works very well. Thanks for your patience!
