Bug Description

Binary package hint: kaffeine

I'm using kaffeine (under kubuntu dapper). If I want to play a remote file in kaffeine (eg: ftp://ftp.funet.fi/.m/mirrors2/ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/events/kde-2-Meeting/big/kde2-001.mpg )
The file is dowloaded (in /tmp) and then played. The issue is that, if you want to play it again (manualy by clicking the play button or if kaffeine is in repeat mode), the file is download again instead of being read from /tmp (where it is yet).

Confirmed. At least for that precise file.

I remember (but cannot test now) that something similar happened with smb:/ shares. - To test.

I have experienced the same problem when using Konqueror.
After using Firefox as Internet browser, this problem has dissapeared. Most probably because of the Download Manager application included with Firefox seems first to download the file and then call Kaffeine to play the local file and not the remote file.

It would be nice that Konqueror had a Donwload Manager with the same capabilities to interact with the rest of applications.

Konqueror actually does have a download manager, called KGet. It's not installed by default though.

Goldenear first reported this bug in Launchpad: https://launchpad.net/bugs/44306

The issue is that when Kaffeine plays a remote file, it loads it into /tmp. But whenever the file is played again or restarted, Kaffeine tries to redownload the file instead of using the cached version in /tmp. Ideally, it would recognize that the file which is requested to be played is already in /tmp and load from that location instead.

Thanks

Good evening,

Are you still having problems with a remote file being reloaded each time it's played? Can we please get a status update on this bug?

Thanks,

Jonathan

This bug is too old, for a version < 1.3. Closing it, as the latest version is 2.0.1, and lots of things changed since version 1.2.x, including the usage of VLC as video display backend, support for DVB-T2 and ISDB-T via libVLC, etc.

You may check on the upstream version and see if the bug was solved. The README file contains instructions about how to compile it. You can find it at our git repository:

https://quickgit.kde.org/?p=kaffeine.git

If you find similar issues with version 2.0.1, please re-open.
