Bug Description

Binary package hint: system-tools-backends

It's quite late in the cycle, but that release is almost completely aimed at fixing bugs in Karmic, and includes a very limited set of changes, plus a few translation updates. Here's the list of bugs that this release fixes in Karmic:

- Upstart compatibility so that we can still manage traditional init.d scripts in Karmic, to reintroduce services-admin (bug 435935)
- Don't daemonize by default to make D-Bus activation work (bug 411533, patch already cherry-picked in Karmic)
- Don't fail with Real Name containing special chars such as apostrophe (bug 180261)
- Fix platform detection in Time module so that time zones can be set (currently completely broken, bug 434565)

Tarball is at http://system-tools-backends.freedesktop.org/downloads/2.8/

And yet another one: bug 450353 is about shares-admin being *completely* broken in Karmic, the fix is already included in 2.8.2 via the rework of Debian versioning that also fixes bug 434565.

Please at least somebody answer. We won't let Karmic without time zones working during all of its life, so better do that before the release; for ten days that this report has been open, things have only got worse.

taking into consideration the amount of people the time zone and shares-admin bugs could affect, this bug should have high or critical importance
i really hope it makes into karmic soon

Thanks Milan - sorry, I've been quite busy with other things recently, so haven't been able to give this much attention. I will mention this to pitti and seb128 tomorrow and see what we need to do to get this in (as we are rapidly approaching final freeze now and I'm not sure if anyone will have the time to work on it). It might be that the time zone stuff has to be cherry-picked as a SRU after release (we already have the change to make DBus activation work in Karmic anyway)

Glad to hear from you Chris! As I said, fixing time zone and SMB can be done with the same patch, which would replace 01_debian_4.0.patch. The patch is at http://cgit.freedesktop.org/system-tools-backends/patch/?id=e2f49be92354f29aee35d265f02e0743d164c6a5

The other major bug that would have been fixed by 2.8.2 is getting back services-admin. That seems complex to do as an SRU, because that would affect the gnome-system-tools as well. I think that's worth the pain, though. Anyway, the patch is http://cgit.freedesktop.org/system-tools-backends/patch/?id=24ae335fbd828410cb3e7c082adba18ad068a4a7

There are no remaining Ubuntu specific patches so we should sync on the Debian package.

Great! Do you plan to get services-admin back in the gnome-system-tools too? That's bug 435935.
