Bug Description

The Ubuntu desktop wallpaper is great, but doesnt have any artwork thats twice the normal width. This would be great to have, especialy since people are trying to have dual monitors more and more.

If we were to do this, we'd need to clarify which sizes we need. I personally feel the package is getting too big already.

There's a very simple solution made possible by a new feature (at last) in Gnome 2.16:

Simply include just one background image (the current 4:3 one), but in /usr/share/gnome-background-properties/ubuntu-wallpapers.xml change
<options>stretched</options>
to
<options>zoom</options>

On a 16:9 screen (or 8:3, as in my dualscreen setup), Zoom crops the 4:3 image from the top and the bottom so that it fits the screen's aspect ratio exactly. With the setting, a separate widescreen image becomes redundant.

Once everything settles down a little, I don't see why a second or third version could be constructed for those who want higher resolution walls across several monitors. The main issue here is package size, and currently, the proposed solution would fix this immediately with no impact on package size.

One alternative is to include a single widescreen image, which will then be cropped from the sides on a 4:3 screen with the zoom setting.

I specifically joined this team to work on this issue and have been waiting for submissions to be accepted. Please see my popular image for edgy.

There is also a dual heal 3500 pixel image on my stream called Satori. I could come up with another 20 images if asked within a few weeks. As a retired commercial designer I could make any of these images available for the next CD release,

I'd like to point out that the following portions of your picture will be visible on 4:3 and 8:3 displays with the Zoom setting:

Additionally, although that is a nice picture, it might have a bit too much contrast for a desktop background. Of course that's just a question of taste.

This template is perfect. Check out of the other work in the stream and set "Best Stuff" or "widescreeen"

Low contrast one of the stairs had some good feedback, and the candle.

Keep in mind Vista RC1 has gone towards including pro photo work for their desktops and I would be happy to donate any of my work, since I did shoot all of these images and own all the copyrights to everything and would only ask for someone on the team to review and select the work that I need to work with gimp/photoshop. ( I work in windows and ubuntu as do most artists I know )

I'll take a few more and have them fit into the dual screen template you created. the 3800 pixel images are better candidates and I have a new Canon 30D camera coming next week which will give me larger originals.

Most of my work was shot with a 6mp Nikon.

I would also point out that Vista has been pushed back
for countless reasons, some of which include their
design directions.

In strict terms of contrast, form should ultimately
follow function. Wallpaper in a house is rarely composed
of images because it must serve both an aesthetic purpose
as well as a functional requirement.

Wallpaper on a desktop should be no different. Examine
how text and icons appear over the varied portions of the
image and you will probably see the result.

Further still, we explored photography at the beginning
of the cycle and there were many issues. Anything shy
of abstract runs the risk of a very distinct connotation,
something that was not desired.

Sincerely,
TJS
