Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase

For me the "align to grid"-functin on the kde-desktop does not work. the icons do not move though they are placed chaotically on my desktop.

The "lock in place" option is not activated.

Does anyone can confirm this misbehavior?

Can not confirm on KDE 3.4.3 on Kubuntu Breezy. What version of KDE are you using?

Oh, and "align to grid" doesn't equal "automatic ordering", at least not in KDE 3.4.3. -> You have to manually select "Line Up Horizontally" or "Line Up Vertically".

(Sidenote: I recall being able to set icon spacing somewhere in KDE configuration on another system, but in 3.4.3 on Kubuntu I seem to be unable to find such an option. Option for icon size is all I have.)

Oh, I forget to say which versions I am using:

It is Dapper Drake with KDE 3.5.2

And the align to grid function does not have to to anything with "line up horizontally" or "line up vertically", because these functions align the icons automatically to a grid, independent of the state of "align to grid".
I expect a behavior similar to the windows-desktop, where this option aligns the icons to a grid, once. In kde this function seems to be permanent, because you can enable and disable it. So, if this option is checked, the user should only be able to move the icons to places in that grid, respecitvely, the icons automatically jump to the nearest grid-place.

But this does not happen! I remember earlier kde versions where it behaved like expected, so this really seems to be a bug to me.

But I will look this thing up in my breezy badger installation for comparison.

(sorry for my lousy english)

In Kubuntu 'Breezy Badger' with KDE 3.4.3 the bug does definitely not appear.

The KDE Bugzilla seems to be down at the moment so I can not lookup if there is also a report about this. Will try again later...

This bug is not critical but it would be nice if it gets fixed until the dapper release. It has a bad impression on users, when such easy things does not work.

So it seems to be the bug #114766 in kde bugzilla. (http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=114766)

a wrong value in kickerrc causes the problem. The Xinerama=-1 option has to be replaced by Xinerama=0.

Can be a more complex bug, so I give more details about my configuration:

I do not use Xinerama or a Multi-Head-System. My nVidia 6600gt card is driven by the proprietary nNvidia-driver. Maybe this does not appear with the free drivers, have not tested yet.

There's nothing wrong with your english. :-)

And the information I added about automatic ordering was just to help identify what the problem is. Apparently you have been able to identify the bug quite clearly - hopefully it will end up being fixed.

When I remember my English-tests, I am quite sure that my English can not be that perfect... :-)

I just tried to reproduce this bug on my notebook with an quite archaic 'ATi Rage Mobility'-chip inside.

And the problem does not occur.

I would like to know, if this bug also appears when you use the free x.org-drivers for the nvidia 6600GT.

I tested for some while with the free 'nv'-driver and the bug does not appear. But according to the kde bug-report at least one person is using an intel driver. And I talked to Lonni J Friedman from nvidia-linux-support and he says it is not a nvidia-driver-bug.

So there must be a problem in kde.

maestro_alubia was right. I had the same problem, changed XineramaScreen to 0 and got it working. Thanks a lot.
