i am afraid i do not understand what exactly should i do. I do not have
xserver-xgl package installed.

I tried the precompiled package and tried to compile maxima 5.9.3 from
source and i still have the same problem.

Ok this seems to be a problem while running the fglrx drivers for xserver, reverting back to the open source ati drivers solve this problem.
