Bug Description

Binary package hint: kubuntu-desktop

Bug appears in Kubuntu Dapper.

Can't switch user through KDE's menu "Switch User->Start New Session".

My system freezes after I press "Start New Session". First it switches to text console and than t hangs up. Nothing helps after it - I even can't reboot with Ctrl+Alt+Del.

I don't really know what backtraces could help there.
What information about my system is necessary.

Thank you for filing this bug.

Does it happen if you use the "ati" driver instead of the fglrx driver?
Does it still happen with a newer version of Kubuntu?

This sounds the same as bug 45108, which is fixed.

But before You changed the videocard, it was a problem?
I.e. that if you'd still have an ATI card?

But hey, he changed the video card's brand and that ended the bug for him,
but for someone else with ATI it should still be problem?

That's true. But since the driver he was using was fglrx (ATI's proprietary driver) instead of the opensource driver (ati), there's not a whole lot we as the opensource community can really do about it. Closed source software is difficult to fix!

The proper procedure to get that fixed would be to notify ATI somehow. I'm not sure how to do that myself, since I don't own any ATI cards and haven't ever interacted with the company.
