Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I opened a .doc from an evolution mail attachement and modified it. To save it permanently (i.e. not in ~/.evolition/...) I selected the "save as ..." menu entry. In the dialog I changed the name and and created and selected a subdirectory of my home directory. After pressing the "Save" button I was asked whether I wanted to keep the .doc format or save in .odf format.

After choosing the .odf option (i.e. I changed the format from .doc to .odf), all the selections that I had done before (file name, directory) were lost. So pressing the "Save" button once again leads to storing the file in the original temporary location (~/.evolution/...).

When I did this the first time I just wondered that the directory was empty after I thought I had stored the file there ...

An easy way to loose hours of work ....

Note this applies to both native dialogs and when "Use OpenOffice.org dialogs" is selected.
Also applies to lucid.

This is a usability bug, especially for naiive users.
The file should be saved with the new extension, in the selected directory, without returning to the Save dialog.

About the severity of this bug. Documents opened directly from email attachments (e.g. in Thunderbird) /tmp. If the edited version is saved back there, it is not just a matter of the document being in the wrong place - it will be lost after a reboot.

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you test if it still occurs on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx)?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through normal support channels, please see:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/support

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

  apport-collect 481592

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report.

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference bug 481592 in your report if you think it may be related):

  ubuntu-bug openoffice.org

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released' or 'Invalid' as appropriate, at the following URL:

OK, for 10.04 it is bug 583187.

BTW I think it is strange to have to essentially duplicate this bug report just because the *same* bug persisted through more than one release?

Open a .doc document. file->save as. navigate to a non-default location on your system to save the document. click save. the "Keep current format / Save in ODF" dialog appears. that's cool - obviously I didn't want to save the document in this diabolic format. click "Save in ODF Format". A completely new "Save As" dialog appears, again, in the default save location - which means the effort the user invested in navigating to the desired location and selecting a file name is wasted.

Proposed improvements:
1. Save the previos location and filename, except for extenstion if it exists.
2. Put the "Keep current format / Save in ODF" dialog in the begining of the flow (immediatly after the user clicks "Save As").

There are no new official OpenOffice.org releases in Ubuntu packaging anymore => Won't Fix

If the problem persists, please mark this bug as "also affects project Libreoffice" or "also affects distribution Libreoffice (Ubuntu)" if that has not happened already.

Please leave references to upstream OpenOffice.org bugs in place to allow cross pollination.

This bug was filed before the changes to Bugzilla on 2011-10-16. Thus it
started right out as NEW without ever being explicitly confirmed. The bug is
changed to state NEEDINFO for this reason. To move this bug from NEEDINFO back
to NEW please check if the bug still persists with the 3.5.0 beta1 or beta2 prereleases.
Details on how to test the 3.5.0 beta1 can be found at:
