Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

When trying to install the latest LinuxMint-8 RC1 release, using my usual manual partitioning selection, the installation progress bar was almost complete but then crashed, displaying the attached 'Installer crashed' window.
As requested, /var/log/syslog and var/log/partman files are also attached.

Bruce, thank you for taking the time to report this bug, but because you were using LinuxMint's Ubiquity installer, you should report this bug to the LinuxMint people instead.

Changed in ubiquity (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid

Bruce, after taking a look at your log messages, we think you might have a bad burn of the ISO.

Thank you for your investigation and message, sent
whilst I managed to install LinuxMint-8RC1.
I found that by applying x57 Updates in a LiveCD
session, it then allowed installation to complete, albeit
reproducing the Ubuntu 9.10 Ext4/'GRUB2' problem
of failing to correctly set up access to this, online copy
of Windows XP, but I will now re-check the integrity
of the original download ISO, as effectively suggested.

(Applying a trick learned from Ubuntu 9.10, I have used
a Karmic kernel version of Clonezilla to 'snapshot' what
I had achieved, before re-installing 64-bit Mint-7 and
then restoring an earlier created SelfImage of Mint-7.)

Yes, Weatherman was right, my [B] rig's DVDRW burner was worn out and had to be replaced, and learning about the new Beta version GRUB2 is now my main priority, as it's screwing up my multi-boot configuration.
It's all complicated by the need to separate underlying Ubuntu 9.10 Bugs from Mint-8RC Bugs.
Rather like dealing with Vista and Windows 7, I'll probably have to give the ext4 distributions their own physically separate hard drives before I can get anywhere.
I suspect that GRUB2 will prove to be 'the bridge too far' rather than ext4 which merely complicates partition imaging and restoration.
It's been a long time since I used Launchpad in anger, but if I can remember how to do it, I'll close this Bug Report, effectively as a 'red herring'.
