Bug Description

Binary package hint: wireless-tools

On a computer running Dapper with an Atheros based wireless card, if `iwlist' is asked to scan on a desactivated device, `iwlist' segfault. After the segfault, network tools, like `ifconfig', freeze when they're invoked.

# deactivate, or deconfigure ath0 before
$ iwlist ath0 scan
Segmentation fault
$ ifconfig
# the tty freeze

I get the same thing here. Here is an output from dmesg that contains a kernel oops. I feel however that this could be due to the binary blob in the module.

This is nearly always a result of the kernel driver returning invalid data, and is actually the driver segfaulting ... you'll probably find a matching oops in dmesg

Is this an issue with a later release, like 7.10 or Hardy?

Hmm, the bug is very old, closing on the assumption that it has been fixed. Reopen if you can reproduce it with Hardy, thanks!
