Parhog,

My problem was that the HD had a damaged portion, and UBUNTU didn't cope
with it. Eventually, partitioned off the bad sectors and it now both os
work ok.

Hello all,

I would be glad to help debug this one, more details on demand.

I have the same, the installer crashed whilst installing the bootloader, which hasn't installed correctly. Is this because GRUB doesn't work if /boot/grub/... can't be accessed by the BIOS? I.e. my / partition is 40GB after the start of the disk (Windows got there first). I've never had GRUB working in this situation, but Lilo does (I think all of LILO fits in the MBR?)

Hello all,

found a way around at least in my case : the partition that would become / had another linux distro in it.
Once I asked the installer to format it installation went smooth.

Keep up the good work !

In case that's the cause, I'll add I had Linux installed on what was to become / (/dev/hda5) in my case too. But I'm 99% sure I asked the installer to format /.

I the end, I booted using the live CD (F6, and adjust the line), installed Lilo and used 'update-lilo' then edited /etc/lilo.conf myself.
