Bug Description

(note: This has been a problem for me since Ubuntu 5.10)

During any processor intensive tasks, it seems that thermal management isn't giving the fans on my dual processor G5 (PowerMac 7,3) enough time to speed up to cool off the processors before it senses them overheating and instantly shuts the entire system down. The module therm_pm72 IS loaded.

Is the i2c-keywest module loaded too?

Take a look at bug #27269.

Most likely this system falls into the category of unsupported for the
thermal system. BenH had told me about this, and unless I am willing to
backport the entire i2c and thermal layer (all of it, not just some of
it) from 2.6.17 into dapper, it's just not going to work until edgy.

Good news is that the first and probably most of edgy's 2.6.17 kernels
will run on dapper. So when it's available, you can upgrade to that
kernel.

Will not be fixed in dapper.

so would installing a 2.6.17rc kernel potentially fix this problem?

would you be willing to try compiling the 2.6.17 kernel with my
config for that?

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
