Bug Description

recently I found this mockup by jimmac:
http://jimmac.musichall.cz/images/guimockups/desktop/logout-vertical.png

I think it has several advantages over the current dialog:
1. it sticks closer to upstream so its not such a radical change
2. you dont have to hover the buttons to see the tooltip
3. integrates the "save session" option

This seems more like a wishlist item than a bug. Should someone set it to that importance?

Marking as a wishlist, could probably be marked as a duplicate of one of the discussions of the new dialog which list some suggestions too. Note that upstream changed their dialogs, that one is not closer to new upstream and we are not likely to change for something different from dapper and upstream now

It may also be worth considering the points that Joel Spolsky raises in his Joel on Software entry entitied "Choices = Headaches"

The question asked is why the user needs so many options. Since Ubuntu is all about making Linux easy and fun, perhaps it is a good candidate distribution to implement such a change. I don't think it is necessary to reduce it down to a single logout option, but the last three that he mentions seems to be a nice balance. Certainly the computer could hibernate from sleep mode after some time has past by.

Anything would probably be an improvement over the current dialog in Dapper. I have to come in and start up a couple machines a week from folks with walnut-sized brains who are accustomed to clicking the lower right button on any popup window they're too lazy to read. In this case, they select 'shutdown,' (the shiny red button on the lower right) and as they're walking off to go sniff glue and forget about their computing experience, the computer is merrily shutting itself down.

This wouldn't be the nightmare it is, if there was a way to disable shutdown privileges for GNOME, but I can't find a way to do that. The next best thing would be to put something less intrusive in the lower right.

Anybody know where to buy a cattle prod that can be activated via bluetooth?

Dan, such a simplification would require coordination between the kernel and desktop teams, and in Ubuntu's current development process would first need to be written up as a specification. (Please CC me if you do that.)

Lou, you should report the lack of a "Sleep, Shut Down, or Restart" permission in the "Users & Groups" Account Properties window as a separate bug.

Matthew, the functionality doesn't belong in the Users and Groups account properties. It belongs on the system level, or the control level. An ordinary user with the same privileges as the logged in user would not have the ability to power down the system. It's something GNOME is doing via its connection to dbus, I think. What GNOME should be doing is allowing you to limit what options are offered by default. There's no reason a user logging out should be offered a painter's palette of logout buttons, when a single logout/cancel button would suffice. If they need to shut the system down, they already would know how.

If you put the functionality as a users/groups attribute, someone with an installation like mine would have to adjust those properties or group memberships for upwards of 45000 users. Not an option. If GNOME has added this option, they should offer some functionality in turning it back off again.
