Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-codec-install

To reproduce:

1. Perform a clean installation of Lucid Alpha 2

2. Do not run any updates

3. Try to play an mp3 file

Note: the same error occurs regardless of whether internet connection is established or not

Screenshot of the problem attached.

Possible solution:

Ubuntu should detect that the update was not performed and run it in the background before searching for codecs.

The root of the problem is that the livefs does not carry the Package lists for universe and multiverse. Attached is a simple patch against ubiquity that does a apt-get update before doing the install_extra() step. Feedback is welcome.

Hm, apt-setup (at least in the currently lucid-daily) does run a apt-get update during the install as part of one of its components. I just did a test install with the current daily (with network) and it appears to work fine.

This bug was fixed in the package gnome-codec-install - 0.4.2ubuntu2

---------------
gnome-codec-install (0.4.2ubuntu2) lucid; urgency=low

  * GnomeCodecInstall/MainWindow.py:
    - if no codecs are found, check if the apt package lists
      are complete and if not ask if the user wants to perform
      a update and redo the search (LP: #510033)
