Live CD fails to boot after powerup

Bug Description

My HP Pavilion n5470 laptop (info below) behaves oddly when I attempt to boot the Dapper Live CD. When I attempt to boot from powerup, it freezes between "Configuring X" and "Preparing restricted drivers". When, however, I boot up Windows (Win2k Professional, SP 4) first then insert the Live CD then "restart" -- the Live CD boots up just fine. (FWIW, Knoppix Live dvd 4.0.2 boots just fine every time)

This behavior is reproducible.

I'd love to installer Dapper on this machine but I'm reluctant to do so ... for obvious reasons

Thanks for help.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

Hi Brian
well, the behavior was very repeatable (with "drake")
when last I tried and utterly stopped me from
installing on my (not so new any more) laptop.

if ok with you, let me try again over weekend (and
i'll try both "drake" and "eft") and then get back to
you.

fwiw, i'm don't know that i'm utterly fixated on
running "drake". i'm intending to press this laptop
into services as a development system. that being
said, i'm not real interested in running pre-release
stuff ("fawn").

(overall though i'm very happy to hear from you (all)
and would like to help as best i can)

I tried out "Edge Eft" (6.10) -- both cd and dvd (downloaded from ubuntu.com) and both booted and worked (on HP Pavilion laptop as described above) like champs. booted properly (from power down) first time, every time.

fwiw, tried out "dapper drake" (both the original and the -1 versions) on cd only. Both failed in the same way as before; (boot first time after successfully booting Win 2K professional; hang on all subsequent attempts)

In addition, I tried first booting "edgy eft" and then booting "dapper drake". Again, first boot of "dapper drake" after successful boot of "edgy eft" worked; all subsequent attempts to boot failed. (hanging in manner previously indicated).

Are you planning on using Edgy then?

Yes, I believe so. I'm intending to "graduate" this
laptop from a Windows development system into a (well,
"open source" for lack of a better term) development
system. So "dapper's" long-term support feature
doesn't really matter to me for my intended
application.

That being said, if you (all) were interested in
running this cute little bug down, I'd be more than
happy to help in whatever way I can.

Thanks for the additional information. The output of 'lspci -vv' and 'lspci -vvn' would be interesting, from Edgy is fine, to determine what part of your hardware may be causing the issue with Dapper. Thanks in advance.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this linux-source-2.6.15 kernel bug to the new "linux" package. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Also, if you would be interested in testing the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release, it is available at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Would you mind opening a new bug for me? I'd like to approach your bug separately from this one.

Thanks!
