I removed "Safe graphics mode" as the xforcevesa option no longer had any effect anyway, and wew're trying to simplify the main menu. You can add 'nomodeset' from the F6 "Other Options" menu at CD boot time, which may help you; that was the only remaining effective part of "Safe graphics mode".

Reassigning to xorg for debugging of why you're getting a blank screen.

Why does this affect the nvidia-graphics-drivers-180? Aren't those the non-free drivers? I assume that the livecd uses the nouveau drivers.
I have the same problem with Aplha3 (64 bits) running the Livecd from a USB key.
After waiting for a while with the black screen, I tried switching the VTs but nothing happened, then I just pressed the enter key and the screen blinked again and I got to the GDM login screen.
I'm on a Dell Precision M90, that has a Quadro FX1500 (G71),
