Bug Description

Hi,
I use the gnome desktop. In System -> Preferences -> Preferred Applications, I can choose my favored web browser, Mail Reader and Terminal Emulator. How about the ability to choose my favorite burning software?

I ask , because whenever I insert a blank CD into my burner, I get an annoying popup titled "Please Choose Disc Type". It asks "You have inserted a blank disc. What would you like to do?"

Then there are buttons for "Ignore", "Make Audio CD", and "Make Data CD". I want to always "Ignore", because I always use K3B for burning. (I like K3B way better then Gnomebaker or Nautilus, as it displays total folder sizes after I've chosen several folders to burn, making it easy for me to know my data will tightly fill up a blank CD or DVD.)

How can I get Gnome to just leave things alone when I insert a blank CD or DVD, so I can just use K3B in peace?

I don't know about how to get Gnome to leave you alone when that happens, but I do agree that it would be a good idea for the 'Preferred Applications' dialog to have more options.

Actually, this bug can be closed now. There is a different place
where one can specify to be left alone when a Blank CD or DVD is
inserted. It's in System -> Preferences -> Removable Drives and Media
-> "Storage" Tab -> Under "Blank CD and DVD Discs", you can uncheck
"Burn a CD or DVD when a blank disc is inserted".

Having said that, there is still sort of a bug there: I am not able to
use the "Command for Audio CDs" and "Command for Data CDs" options
just below that to launch K3B properly, even though K3B is in my path,
or even if I put in the full pathname to the K3B executable.

Cheers,
Dustin,

I'm not sure if thats the same bug. That probably deserves to be a bug by it's self, and I'm setting this as rejected now anyhow.

Thanks for the report.

Actually,

I think I might stick in a spec for extending the current Preferred Application box with more options.

Cheers for the inspiration. :)

Matt, thank you!! This would be a huge feature that Windows does not,
and probably will not ever have: the easy and straightforward ability
to control all one's preferred applications in one place.

If I can throw in 2 more cents, you might also want to consider making
"Preferred Applications" be a centralized location to edit all file
type "associations". In other words, for all files of type, say,
.doc, OpenOffice Writer could be specified as the application to open
that file type.

Right now, to accomplish this, one must have, for example, a .doc file
in nautilus, then right click it, choose properties, then choose the
"Open with" tab, then pick the application. This current approach is
not centralized, as one must track down and right click one file of
every type.

I'm glad you like the idea. :)

I'll get on writing the spec (my first one :D) and see what the powers that be think of it then.

If you want to work with me on this that would be grand.

I've put the spec together, I'm not sure what the quality is like compared to specs made by the pros, but its a start: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/enhanced-preferred-apps

Hi Matt,

Thank you for your offer to help out on the spec, etc. but I can't get
too involved at this time. I can squeeze in the time once in a while
to file a carefully-written bug, but that's about it these days.
