Bug Description

This is a webcam microphone, it shows up in the "Hardware" tab of Sound Preferences (and in "Configuration of pavucontrol) but not in the "Input" tab (or "Input Devices" in pavucontrol).

This is a regression since possibly a week or two.

I tried with 2 other USB headset/soundcards and it is the same problem (0c76:1607 JMTek, LLC. and 0c45:184c Microdia VoIP Phone).

Downgrading the kernel to 2.6.32-14.20-generic fixes the issue.

@Tormod:

Can you try the 2.6.32-15 kernel to see if it exhibits the incorrect behavior or not?

2.6.32-15.22-generic works fine. This is kind of severe for me, since the built-in analog mic input does not work in Ubuntu.

For comparison I will rerun apport-collect using this kernel.

Now everything is fine with -16. Go figure. There was a pulseaudio update in between, maybe it changed things to the better. I will reopen the bug if it appears again.

Now the problem is back again, so maybe it is intermittent. But contrary to what I said earlier, the internal analog mic input works (again).

If the mic is working, what's the problem? Is it only working intermittently? Can you describe in detail what you mean by intermittent? Does it work or not work during a single boot, or does it come and go during a single session?

The analog *internal* mic input is working. That was a bit off-topic, it just makes the issue less severe for me. The USB audio comes and goes between reboots. Within a session (I will have to double-check for boot) it stays. I wonder how I can debug this. Comparing the alsa-info.sh debug output from a good/bad case I can not find any difference.

I thought it was a kernel problem since it coincided with kernel updates/downgrades but now I have seen it be both good and bad on the same -16 kernel, I think it might be pulseaudio.

Since the mic is showing up in the "Hardware" tab of the pulseaudio controls, I'm also thinking this is a pulseaudio issue, and not a kernel issue.

It is apparently pulseaudio: Now it went bad after logging out and in again. But after stopping pulseaudio with -k and restarting with -vvvvv it was good again.
