Slow 2D graphics and high CPU usage when idle

Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-26-686

When using the above kernel, 2D graphics in X lag considerably. E.g., the fading in xscreensaver is much slower than it should be. However, 3D accelerated graphics were not apparently affected. In all cases with X, the fglrx driver was used. Also, CPU usage is anywhere from about 30--60% even when idle.

The solution was to downgrade to the equivalent -386 kernel. Now the graphics no longer lag, CPU usage is only a few percent when idle, and the booting process is noticeably quicker.

This bug seems to also affect linux-image-2.6.15-25-686. I am not sure what the earliest kernel image is that is affected, but I did not notice these problems until recently.

I believe the problem exists because both the -686 and the -686-smp kernels in the repos are compiled for smp processors. I had the same problem. I guess the best solution would be to go back to having the regular -686 kernel NOT include smp support and have that only in the -686-smp kernel.

Actually, the solution is to just use the -386 kernel. Having a -686
non-smp kernel would not give you any benefit.

Also, no, the -686 and -686-smp are not both compiled SMP, simply
because there is only one image, and that's -686. It uses
SMP-Alternatives to lesson the overhead of running on UP systems. (Yes,
there is a linux-686 and linux-686-smp, but those are metapackages, and
the latter only exists to help with upgrades).

Technically, 90% of people who have a UP system should be running the
-386 kernel.

If that is the case, is there documentation somewhere about this? When installing the kernel, the package description does not make note anywhere that "90% of people" shouldn't use this image, it just says which processors it is for.

Is this a dupe of bug 30557?

I don't think so. I am only affected when using the 686 kernel, not the 386 kernel.

Oddly enough, prior to 2.6.15 I used the 686 kernel with great results on my Pentium M, but now I can't. However, the 386 kernel works great for me with 2.6.15

I also had no problem with the -686 kernels for a while, though I'm not sure precisely when this became a problem. It is very likely that as you say, only the 2.6.15 kernels are affected.

actually, 2.6.15-23 seems to work fine it just seems like a problem with
-26. Also, this is not a GL problem since regular dekstop 2D animations
are badly affected...

I have the same problem (bug #53598) with Intel 950 graphics on a Core Duo laptop (ThinkPad X60s). It is not a GL problem since it affects Desktop animations.

It seems to be a problem with the 2.6.15-26 kernel but it is much MUCH worse with 2.6.15-26 686 than 2.6.15.26 386 (in my experience.)

let me repeat, it has nothing to do with GL...

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this linux-source-2.6.15 kernel bug to the new "linux" package. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Also, if you would be interested in testing the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release, it is available at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. Thanks!
