Binary package hint: plymouth
Installed Xubuntu 8.04, installed all upgrades, restarted the system. I then ran the upgrade using 'update-manager -d'. No splash screens are shown between the grub and Xubuntu splash. Instead I am seeing many text messages, ???udev will be removed in the next version.
Since I forgot to enable bootlogd, I will attach the dmesg.txt after another restart

What does "???udev will be removed in the next version." mean? Is that a quote of a message that was shown on your screen?
In general, no splash + text messages is bug #535108.
