I upgraded to Dapper from Breezy via dist-upgrade.

I think beagle is not installed, but how do I check?

Do you have a .beagle directory to your user directory? might be fixed with nautilus 2.14.3 which has been uploaded to dapper-updates today (needs to be accepted and build before being available) which has this mentionned to its ChangeLog:
" * libnautilus-private/nautilus-search-engine-beagle.c:
        (nautilus_search_engine_beagle_new): Check whether daemon is
running as beagle_client_new doesn't fail when a stale socket
        file exists."
