Bug Description

I initially attributed this to a hardware problem, but I've actually swapped the video card and disk into a completely different machine and the problem has recurred. The only other explanation is that the video card itself is failing and bringing the system down with it. The card is:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]

and occasionally (infrequently, unreproducibly) the entire system hangs, requiring a power cycle. This started happening approximately the week of July 10-14th.

This bug is rejected because from the supplied information there's no way to even start tracking this down.

The most likely cause of strange unexplained hangs isn't hardware failure, but a poorly performing power supply.

I appreciate your responsiveness, but please read my report more carefully. The problem recurs in an entirely different system: different powersupply, motherboard, RAM, CPU. So it's either an X fault or a problem with the card itself. I've never seen a failing video card bring the system down, and the timing was coincidental with the landing of new X.org code in Edgy, so I'm leaning toward the former (with appropriate hesitation given the unreproducibility of the problem).

It's possible that this has the same root cause as bug #54650, but please leave it open in the meantime until I'm able to collect more data. I'd like to hear about it if anyone else is experiencing a similar problem.

I'm now able to confirm that this is not the same as bug #54650, since with the latest code (including that fix), I have experienced the hang again.

I had hoped to swap this for a similar ATI card, but haven't been able to locate one quickly, and can't tolerate the instability, so I've had to swap for a spare NVIDIA card (and forego 3D acceleration with free drivers). No real hope of tracking this down now.
