Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-core

I first noticed this in Dapper, but seems to be even worse with Edgy. Even when 'top' reports no processes using more than 2% of CPU time, there is a noticeable lag whenever I press a key (I'd estimate at least 0.1 seconds), some keystrokes are dropped altogether, and sometimes auto-repeat sticks 'on' until I bash some other keys to make it stop. I checked my keyboard accessibility settings, but everything except 'repeat keys' is turned off.

I'm using a Powerbook G4, ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 card, radeon driver, X.org 7.1.1 (latest edgy packages).

this might need to be filed against pbbuttonsd not xorg
have you tried without X running at the console and get the same results ?

Hmm, without X running, console performance isn't noticeably better, and I can reproduce the sticking-auto-repeat feature there too. So I guess this isn't an X problem at all.

Indeed, I don't think this problem is X related at all. Marking it rejected (for pacakge xorg-server) - bug is still open/valid for pbbuttonsd, though.

Yep, I just tried stopping pbbuttonsd (never occurred to me that might be a factor), and performance does seem to be noticeably better.

Is there any way you could test this bug on Edgy Beta 1 or a nightly build so we can see if this still exists.

I'm running all the latest Edgy packages (most recently updated today)... seems as bad as ever.

I'm having the same (or worse) problem.

I was running dapper on my G4 Quicksilver with no problems. I try to dist-upgrade to Edgy and after rebooting, I end up with a blank screen. I switch over to a terminal and it won't let me log in.

So, I download the edgy ppc live CD. The computer starts up very slowly, but eventually I get to the desktop. I try to install, but when I get to filling in fields, my keyboard doesn't work at all. I try typing in open office and I have the same problem. I pull up a terminal window, and I still have problems (which would probably explain why I couldn't log in).

My mouse, which is plugged into the keyboard, works fine. At times, the keyboard starts spitting out random digits (usually the same one over and over), but most of the time I get nothing.

Can you post the printout of:

cat /proc/cpuinfo

This will give us information on your specific model of PowerBook

I'm running Edgy Beta 1 + 10/15/06 on a PowerBook 5,2 (1Ghz FW800) and I haven't run into this issue yet. Is there anyone out there with this issue that can post their cat /proc/cpuinfo so we could see what machines seem to be effected by this issue.

after many months of great stability. Sometimes I see random keyboard input of like

Not sure if I'm using pbbuttonsd.

No keypress lag.

Thanks for any ideas.
