This might all be caused by a incongruity I noticed in the partitioning section. I called for four partitions: '/'; swap partition; '/usr'; and '/home'.

The graphic view had them listed in order as hdb8, hdb5, hdb6 and hdb7, while the next section had them in order as hdb5, hdb6, hdb7, and hdb8.

I noted the descrepancy and continued the install. I left to refill my coffee and the error notification was on my screen when I returned.

Thanks for your report. I'm afraid that your disk seems to be too small to complete an Ubuntu desktop installation successfully. Bug 48355 notes that the partitioner should have warned you about this.

Not really, because the real problem was that the partitioner was the cause of it. It changed the partitions around from how I had them set up in the first place. The way the partitioner interpreted my setup was to put the root directory in the space I allocated for the swap drive. That, or a mismatch on one of the other drives ('/usr/' into '/'), is probably what caused the crash. And I figured out how it happened in my head.

When I was making the partitions on the drive, it was on top of another Linux installation. I deleted the root partition and put another one in it's place, which the installer marked as hdb8. Then I deleted the other three partitions (swap, /usr and /home) and added new ones, which the installer marked hdb5, 6 and 7. When I went to the next screen, the partitions had been swapped around so that they were in the order 5, 6, 7 and 8, but the order that I has assigned their partition types was not swapped with them. So the 2.1G root partition became the 2.1G /usr partition, the 1.25G swap became the 1.25G root, etc.

I went back and deleted all the partitions at once, reinstalled them in order and had no problem with the installation at all.

** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 48355
partitioner should warn about too small disk while autopartitioning (some_device)

Can you please try to reproduce the crash and attach /var/log/partman as well ?

LOL Well, if you'd asked me that right after I'd installed it there would have been no problem. But I've already installed so much stuff, and done so much work, on the system that it doesn't look like a very exciting idea.

I'll tell you what. I have another partition for linux on another HD. (I'm basically trying out different linux versions to find which one is right for me. So far, Ubuntu rates pretty high on my 'keep' scale.) I can try and install it on that partition as well, though I don't know if that will cause a conflict of some sort. The main thing I'm worrying about is the new install reconfiguring Grub. But if the install bombs out like it did last time, it won't get to that point, will it?

Well actually if you managed to install after all, there's no need to reinstall. |Just attach /var/log/installer/partman. Thanks for responding so quickly and for reporting this!

Zaphod, thanks for reporting. If that is actually happened (and we have no reason to doubt it is correct :) ) then this is a very interesting case. I'm marking it as Medium so it will appear on Colin's radar.

As Vassilis says, /var/log/installer/partman would be very interesting to see.

There is a ton of 'Error reading inode' messages in the log, which is also the case for bug #50825 in which the installer also seems to confuse the partitions.
