Bug Description

This is a new problem, since a recent upgrade (I think that an upgrade of the cupsys package was responsible - but it may have been smb-common).

Printing from Ubuntu to a shared HP printer on a Windows XP box, using the samba protocol now fails. It fails also with printers that are shared with IPP. The printing icon is displayed temporarily, but no output from the printer. There is no entries in /var/log/cups/error_log relating to this error.

When the printer is connected directly to the ubuntu box (and the settings changed to reflect the new connection of the printer) printing works perfectly.

Using cupsys v1.2.1-0ubuntu2 and smb-common v3.0.22-1ubuntu3.1

May be a WORKAROUND:
DOWNGRADE cupsys 1.2.2-0ubuntu0.6.06 -> 1.2.0-0ubuntu5, and my HP 4L who shared with IPP under Debian Sarge runs again.

The same problem arose since an upgrade of the cupsys package - smb is not present.
Printer - Canon bjc 4300
OS - ubuntu 6.06
cupsys v 1.2.1-0ubuntu2
printing icon displayed, but no output from the printer.
changing printer model to canon bjc 4200 (shares same driver with canon bjc 4300 ) is a workaround

again, my printer is not working after a update on cupsys - updated to cupsys 1.2.2-0ubuntu0.6.06 - printer canon bjc 4300 prints only a few lines then stops the output - same occurs using canon bjc 4200 driver

Same problem:

I'm used to use a Debian print server with cupsys 1.1.23-12 and a HP 4+. Printing from a Ubuntu box with cupsys 1.2.1 worked perfektly. Since I've been using cupsys 1.2.2 I get the folewing printing result:

-12345X@PJL
@PJL SET MANUALFEED=OFF
@PJL SET ECONMODE=OFF
@PJL SET COPIES=1
@PJL SET RET=MEDIUM
@PJL SET BINDING=LONGEDGE
@PJL SET DUPLEX=ON
.....

followed by some lines of cryptic symbols.
Different driver (lj4dith,ljet4,hpijs) don't fix the problem for me.

Hi,

In deed, the latest Ubuntu 6.06 Cupsys update packages impacted printing, only from Ubuntu 6.06 clients to Ubuntu 6.06 servers.
I also get a page with '$$' at the top left when the bug occures.

Apparently, it isn't related to the server, only the clients are having issues because the old SuSE 9.2 client system didn't have any problems with printing even though the server had the latest Ubuntu 6.06 updated packages.

Any how, the apparent fix is to un-coment ServerName <IPP_Server_IP> in /etc/cups/client.conf and replace <IPP_Server_IP> with the IP address of the CUPS server.

Tried it, but unfortunately it doesn't solve anything for me.

@Till Kamppeter

I dist-upgraded to Edgy Beta over the weekend hoping it would fix this problem. Unforunately it hasn't done that for me.

However strangely enough the problem seems only to be with my HP LaserJet 5L. I can print to a Canon iP4200 (which is physically connected to the same machine as the LaserJet) from my Ubuntu laptop quite easily.

Can you check whether bug #63707 is hitting you?

Do

ls -l /usr/lib/cups/backend*

and post the output.

Then do

chmod a+rx /usr/lib/cups/backend*/ipp
chmod a+rx /usr/lib/cups/backend*/smb

and check whether everything is working correctly now.

Hi everybody,

unfortunable the problem persists with the actual patch of ubuntu 6.06 LTS. That is not the desired reaction for a LONG TERM SUPPORT. And that should not be a prio low problem. As the predecessors wrote no solution and no workaround exists.
SuSE 10.2 has not such a problem. The problem affects Ubuntu, Edubuntu, Kubuntu. Please provide a fix not only for experimental versions.

Same problem,

In Ubuntu Gusty its possible to configure an IPP printer (HP Laserjet 1320), but it doesn't print anything. In Kubuntu Gusty and Ubuntu Festy it works well.

(Solved by editting the CUPS files to allow the Web interface adding the printer in that way)

I have a similar problem that cropped up a few weeks ago. One week the printer (HP2110) was working fine, then the next, after some updates, it can't get to the printer. Same thing on all four of my Ubuntu Gutsy systems. Oddly, I can print to it fine from my VirtualBox virtual XP installation on the same computer, but not from the host Ubuntu system. I haven't found a way around the problem except to move files to be printed over to the virtual XP installation.

Just installed Xubuntu 8.10 as a newbie with a hope that I'd have a much lighter and faster + easier to use system to breathe life into a rather old and low powered laptop. All worked well but cant print to my HP PSC 1410. Ubuntu picks up the network printer attached to XP system on wireless network. XP system is configured correctly I believe and works with other systems on the network. Hope this is a bug that can be fixed soon as I have lost many an hour trying to get this working....looks like its now accepted as a bug but its high priority I would have thought....
