Bug Description

Binary package hint: kernel-image-2.6.15-26-amd64-generic-di

This is 6.06 amd64:

root@dm:~# pvcreate /dev/sda5
Physical volume "/dev/sda5" successfully created
root@dm:~# pvcreate /dev/sda5
Failed to write physical volume "/dev/sda5"
root@dm:~# pvcreate /dev/sda5
Physical volume "/dev/sda5" successfully created

Then:

root@dm:~# vgcreate vg00 /dev/sda5
No physical volume label read from /dev/sda5
/dev/sda5 not identified as an existing physical volume
Unable to add physical volume '/dev/sda5' to volume group 'vg00'.

but it works with Xen's 2.6.16 kernel

Please attach the output of "pvdisplay -vv"

Pretty sure this isn't a kernel bug.

I had the same problem (not on amd64) that I could create physical volumes with pvcreate but after that I could not create a logical volume. It would reply with exactly that same error. Then I tried pvdisplay -vv and saw that my partitions could also be addressed as /dev/evms/...

I tried:
root@timewarp:~# pvcreate /dev/evms/sdb1
  Physical volume "/dev/evms/sdb1" successfully created
root@timewarp:~# pvcreate /dev/evms/sda4
  Physical volume "/dev/evms/sda4" successfully created
root@timewarp:~# vgcreate vg /dev/evms/sda4 /dev/evms/sdb1
  Volume group "vg" successfully created

Looks like this is a conflict between evms and lvm. Not sure which one is at fault, but let's start with evms.

Same error when I use vgcreate; but it errors on the second physical volume.

I have a 5 drive system, 1 system drive and 4 that I'm attempting to use as a large video storage volume. (Dapper K7)

All 4 drives (hde, hdf, hdg, hdh) completed pv create and show the correct info with pvdisplay. when I try vgcreate;

#vgcreate -s 32M vg0 /dev/hde /dev/hdf /dev/hdg /dev/hdh

I get the following error:

/dev/hdf not identified as an existing physical volume

unable to add physical volume "/dev/hdf" to volume group vg0

Note: the error is always referring to the second drive in the vgcreate command, I have tried several combinations of drive orders my attempts.

Same error for vgcreate on anything unless referring to /dev/evms/*.

Attached script has pvdisplay -vv, if that helps.

Sebastian;
pvcreate works for Ubuntu 7.10 (actually Mythbuntu 7.10).
Thanks for your efforts.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest version of Ubuntu 7.10. It won't be fixed in previous versions of Ubuntu because the bug doesn't fit requirements for backporting. Seehttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports for more information.
