Bug Description

I'm surprised I couldn't find another bug on this topic, but I didn't; and so I filed this one. I'm sure it's also known about, but I'd like to be sure I know what's going on.

When I try to burn a CD, I don't get the option to burn using my CD writer - only to an image. There's not much point burning an image to an image, so I'm guessing this is broken. It mightn't be nautilus though - could be udev or something (but I don't know anything about that). Do correct me if I'm wrong.

It seems to be a problem with HAL. Other applications (sound juicer) which detect CD/DVD drives through HAL don't work either.

I think the error occured after the /dev/hd* -> /dev/sc* transition.

Probably... But nothing to do with the transition though, as my drive is (and always has been) scd0.

The problem that I saw is the the nautilus-cdburning process jast hangs when I click 'burn'.
Also, when dragging files to the nautilus-cdburning files, they don't always get copied over.

In my case, a empty cd icon is placed on the desktop but the nautilus cd burning hangs and won't use it. Gnomebaker can still use it.
Is this the same behavior or another problem?

This is another problem. I don't experience these effects. Just the lack
of writing support.

could you run /usr/lib/nautilus-cd-burner/list_cddrives and lshal and attach the logs to the bug?

I'm experiencing this, too. Can we change the bug title to "Optical Drives not detected in HAL" or something more appropriate?

From my hald log:

19:43:08.488 [I] blockdev.c:625: Ignoring hotplug event - no parent
19:43:08.488 [W] blockdev.c:990: Not adding device object

Is this the problem?

Looks rather like it. I wanna know, though, why it's "not adding device object".

It's the fact that the device has a NULL parent.

My CD drives, floppy drives, RAM disks and DeviceMapper devices all have the same problem.
