Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

I use ubuntu dapper with gnome. After installing today's upgrades (8/19/06), synaptic and Add/Remove Programs no longer worked. I couldn't open synaptic. Add/Remove Programs opened but quit when I tried to install anything.

When I input synaptic into the command line, I got:

synaptic: error while loading shared libraries: libvte.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

However, aptitude still worked. In aptitude, I did some tweaking with libvte-common. I'll attempt to be more specific with what i did, although I'm not completely sure what it was (>_<). Basically, I think I uninstalled the latest version which prompted it to install the previous version (or something like that.)

Here's the aptitude output:

I'm not sure where you have libvte4 0.13.5-0ubuntu2 from. I'm pretty sure that package has never been published for Dapper. Do you have any third party repositories enabled?

I have these third-party repositories. If it's to do with them, does it still merit a post as an ubuntu bug?

deb http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf dapper free non-free
deb-src http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf dapper free non-free
deb http://psavo.iki.fi/ubuntu/dapper/ ./

deb http://www.beerorkid.com/compiz dapper main deb http://ubuntu.compiz.net/ dapper main

This was caused by a backport of vte by a third party. Information on how to fix this is found at http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=239238

The package that's been broken (libvte) has came from a 3rd party repository (one of the compiz ones), not from Ubuntu, so no it's not a ubuntu bug.

libvte is the embedded terminal used in synaptic/gnome-terminal and others.
