" whenever i right click on an application and select open with other application and select a suitable application to open that file , it gives following error

            Could not add application
Could not add application to the application database

this is not for all application but here is list of those who are feeling this problem
    1-xchm
2-wine(in this case i used select a custome and wrote wine as i used to do in breezy)
    3-real player
4- mplayer
5-gxine
6-gedit & mousepad(for ascii files without .txt extention)"

note that all these application work during command line ,like
  wine /home/computername/filename.exe
and all work fine in command line.also the work while opening them first and going to file menu and chhsing open file.
i am using gnome desktop. my pc is dell ,intell p3 ,256Mb

What version of Nautilus are you using currently? Please paste the command "apt-cache policy nautilus" to provide this info.

I had the same problem. Solved it by executing "sudo chown -R $USER.$USER .local/" in my home directory. Is this okay?

My .local/ diretory was owned by root.root. In the .local/ there were references to google-earth. Maybe there is a problem with that package?

there is no "google-earth" Ubuntu package, might be an issue with that software though

Yes, this is definitely issue with googleearth software.

Anyways, shouldn't Nautilus check if it can read/write to .local/ and if not, provide meaningful error message?

marking as rejected then, that's not an Ubuntu package issue

it should probably, I'm pretty sure that has already been mentionned on
some other bug, no need of a new bug for that
