after xrandr desktop icons can go missing

Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

1) Do xrandr -o left
2) Enjoy your rotated desktop for a bit. Make sure to move some icons to the bottom of the screen.
3) Get bored of this.
4) xrandr -o normal.

The icons that you moved to the bottom are gone now. You have no way to get them back except "clean up by name".

When the size of the desktop changes nautilus should bring the icons back within the limits of the desktop.

A related issue, captured in bug #408710, is that Nautilus places icons in "dead space", the unreachable part of the desktop adjacent to the smaller of two different sized monitors used simultaneously. This is still a very common use-case for laptop users.

The issue was mentioned in this blog over a year ago, but it seems no progress has been made: http://blogs.gnome.org/cneumair/2008/09/19/nautilus-multihead-desaster/

I can also confirm it still happens, somehow the dead space of the desktop is still accessible (also by mouse), and thus icons are placed there. It's been like this for years (see Jeremy Nickurak's links) and a fix would be highly appreciated!

Still experiencing the problem with up to date Lucid Beta 2.
Not sure how a bug report would come through if nothing crashes.

I have a 1440x900 on my laptop. and an external 1920x1080. Once connected in twinview mode, 1440x900 behaves like 1440x1080 on desktop. Icons start disappearing to the dead space :( I have tried with both compiz and metacity and have the same problem incase those two are causing issues. maybe its an nvidia bug!

Of all the things us Linux folks are ahead of Windows, we surely don't do well when it comes to multiple monitors! the nvidia forum support for dual monitor is entirely xorg.conf editing instead of using the settings manager they provide. Come on we need this to atleast work seamlessly!

I hate to say it, but this bug is more than 10 YEARS old see:

By using upstream components you get upstream problems, although downstream it also haven't been fixed yet.

It still affects us on Ubuntu Precise Pangolin 12.04 LTS.
