Bug Description

When headphones or a microphone is connected to the external jacks on a Dell Optiplex XE, sound input or output is not rerouted to the external connectors. E.g. sound output still goes through the internal speaker when headphones are connected. External mic is not recognized at all.

Mathieu,

Can you try the linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r) from ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev?

Ok, so there are two separate problems here.
First, for the output issue, upstream design is to let headphones mute internal speakers, and leave line-outs alone. And according to specifications as well as BIOS, this machine has no headphone jack, so the behaviour is expected.

Second, for the microphone issue, please catch me on irc for either a remote debugging session or setting up ssh access to the machine.

Assuming fixed in later versions of Ubuntu (due to reports of linux-backport-modules working), and closing tasks for older versions due to inactivity.
