Was it working previously in Edgy? Or was this a fresh install?

This was previously working in edgy.

In fact, it seems intermittent. Some bootups have sound and some
don't.

This may be something on my end, but I haven't figured out what yet.

Same problem on a T60p. Sound wasn't working in dapper either.

I've read reports that you could get it to work using alsaconf - however this tool is not included with ubuntu (nor should it as its highly deprecated...).

Must be a configuration problem, I remember reading something about front volume...

Oh forgot to say:

The sound is not just muted - the soundcard is not recognised at all by any programs.

Output from xmms... I hardly think "invalid argument" is a good thing :-)

Is snd-hda-intel loaded? Is the modem _enabled_ in bios? Are you using the latest bios?

After upgrading bios and turning on modem, sound now works (not sure if upgrading the bios helped).

My thinkpad came shipped with the modem turned off. I will never ever use the modem.

I still think its a bug that ubuntu can't startup sound if the modem is turned off (snd-hda-intel is loaded, it just for some odd reason fails to work). As far as I remember turning on the modem also drains the power faster when running on battery...

You don't have to rely on the alsa* utils, you could also use the
gnome volume control applet.

Mark, any status update? (If you have a modem, make sure it's enabled in bios.)

It usually works. There are times when Ubuntu boots up and alsa doesn't configure the sound correctly, but I haven't figured out what triggers it.

just an FYI, I haven't updated to feisty yet, I've recently upgraded my bios, modem is enabled, and this is still happening.

I can second this exact behavior. I've got an X60, running the latest BIOS as of this writing, and the modem is enabled. Sometimes sound works, sometimes it doesn't. Reloading the sound modules does not get it working, and sometimes a reboot won't make it work either. However, it usually works after a power cycle.

Running 7.04 (Feisty) with all the latest updates as of this writing. I'm happy to try and triage this further, but I have no idea where to begin. :(

I discovered that there is some sort of disconnect between the hardware audio control (the buttons above the keyboards) vs the software controls.

The software controls seemed unable to do anything until I pressed one of the buttons above they keyboard -- somehow that undid the mute.

I discovered that there is some sort of disconnect between the hardware
audio control (the buttons above the keyboards) vs the software
controls.

The software controls seemed unable to do anything until I pressed one
of the buttons above they keyboard -- somehow that undid the mute.
