Bug Description

Binary package hint: liferea

After updating the Liferea package to version 1.6.3 (-1ubuntu3), the tray icon doesn't work anymore.

I tried adding an indicator applet to the panel, but that shows other unnecessary icons, and combines Liferea and Pidgin (which does still have its own tray icon) into one email-looking icon, thus obscuring new news items.

I've downgraded back to version 1.6.2 for now. Please put back Liferea's tray icon. It wasn't perfect, but much better than that indicator thing.

The tray icon should show up if you do not have the indicator applet on the panel - at least this is the case for me. Does the tray icon not show for you without the indicator applet? If yes, it is a bug and should be fixed.

I just checked again. Liferea is running, but no tray icon is shown. I can make the main window show up by running "liferea -w shown" ("WARNING **: Liferea seems to be running already!"), but still no tray icon. When I click the × on the main window, it just disappears.

Why am I the assignee for this bug? I'm not involved in this project except as a user and bug reporter.

I'm fed up of Ubuntu patches just wiping out perfectly good Notification Area icons. Notification Area is currently more functional and easier to use than the "space saving" Indicator Applet. I've got 3840px of screen width; I don't need to save space!

In short, can this patchset (that is from Ubuntu - not upstream) be replaced with something that looks for a Indicator Applet instance before adding to it, and falling back to Notification Area if it can't find one.

That's what it's *supposed* to do. I wrote it in such a way that it should show the notification area icon when the indicator applet is not available. I'll investigate the reason why it apparently fails.

I have uploaded the fix to my PPA: http://launchpad.net/~sikon/+archive/liferea-1.6-libindicate

Kimiko, Oli, when -1ubuntu3+sikon1 builds, please test and write if this works for you. In the meantime, I'll prepare a debdiff to be sponsored into Ubuntu proper.

Ah, I see. I thought the assigning of bugs was only for developers.

I've installed the +sikon1 packages, and now Liferea works as it should again, with a tray icon.

Thank you for your very quick replies ^_^

Debdiff.

liferea (1.6.3-1ubuntu4) maverick; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/libindicate.patch:
    + ui/ui_indicator.c:
      - Correctly determine when the indicator menu is unavailable, to show
the notification area icon as a fallback (LP: #609827).
    + ui/ui_prefs.c:
      - Hide all tray-related checkboxes in indicator mode; leave the "start
minimized" checkbox shown and rename it accordingly.

I personally would like to choose whether the tray icon is shown or liferea adds to the indicator menu. This seems to be impossible
