Bug Description

Binary package hint: evince

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and find a number of PDFs do not render correctly. After doing some analysis and working with people I found that this is because the poppler-data package is not installed. Once this is installed the issue goes away.

As such I believe the evince package should change from suggesting poppler-data to depending on it.

I originally posted pdf files appears blank Bug #389182
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/389182

My problem pdf files are still blank both as thumbnails and in evince however they display correctly in Acrobat Reader as before.

I am now using Ubuntu 10.04 with all current updates. I searched in Ubuntu Software Centre and the poppler-data package was installed. Is there anything further that I should try? Thanks.

Ivan,

I know you cannot attach the problematic PDF files because they have sensitive information, but we cannot fully help you as we cannot easily reproduce the bug without those files. Are there any PDF files that show up blank but do not contain any sensitive information?

Regardless, your bug may not be related to this one as having poppler-data installed didn't fix it. Would you mind installing Okular and opening your PDF files with it? I ask this because this sounds somewhat similar to bug 565823.

I took a closer look at the comments in bug 389182 and you have tried Okular with your PDF files, which still came out blank.

So I think this is most likely a bug with Poppler (the PDF rendering backend for both Evince and Okular). Unfortunately, since you cannot attach the problematic PDF files, we cannot fully help you out.

However, I did see this information about your files: they were created with Paolo Gios' software. If we can find some PDF files created with this software, we may be able to reproduce your bug and work on fixing it.

Let's move this discussion to bug 389182 since it's not related to this bug. I have un-duped and reopened that bug.

Adding poppler-data to Depends or Recommends is a reasonable solution, and some other information is available in Bug 200446.

Please consider to give this a fix, it's not so hard.

I would strongly go for Depends. It's clear that there is quite a few PDFs that don't render correctly without it and it doesn't create a good impression.
