Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error caused by a corrupted archive. Please execute the following commands, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal ( Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal ) :

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your issue. If so please set the bug's status to Invalid. Thanks in advance!

Hi! As I got that error message when upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to the
latest version, I downloaded the Ubuntu's latest version from it's web
site, I burned it to a CD and tried to install that version directly. When
doing that, I haven't received any error message. The installation was
successfull. Thanks for your help.

I'd like to, but my installation has stopped working altogether. It refuses to boot now. I'm just going to wipe and reinstall.
