Bug Description

In nautilus, there is no visual indication when something has been cut, it looks exactly the same as when it has been copied.
This is a problem, as it makes mistakes more likely in which users might lose track of where their files are.

For example, a few files might be moved to a usb key, and the original might be lost as the user expected it to still be in the original location. Or, someone might want to copy something from e.g. dropbox, accidentally click cut and never notice the difference when pasting it to the home folder. But to all other users of that file in dropbox, the file is suddenly gone.

It might be useful to give some visual indication when a file has been cut (such as making the files transparent as in windows), or give some indication during and after pasting warning that the original files will be lost, and giving the option not to remove the original files, for example using the InfoBar widget.

The statusbar displays the following message as the case may be....

"[filename] will be moved if you select the Paste command"

or

"[filename] will be copied if you select the Paste command"

Its a little obscure but it is there. I;m guessing you're looking for something to Window's transparency effect.

I'm not sure it qualifies as a papercut though, more a feature request.

I disagree. However, it seems this has already been addressed in ubuntu 10.10, meaning this bug report is fixed.

Yes, it does show up in the status bar, but it would be easier for new users if the transparency effect was implemented.

Also, this is a feature request, where you want a feature which is available in 10.10 to be backported to 10.04.

Since the file/folder transparency is a feature request, I'm marking this as an invalid papercut. If you would like to see this feature implemented in Ubuntu, you should suggest it at http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com

Changed in hundredpapercuts:

Changed in nautilus (Ubuntu):
