The Unity bar and panel have returned for me, although there seems to be another side affect.

Intermittently the menus in both the panel and in applications (eg. firefox) do not display. The menus are active as I can blindly select items on the menu, I just cant see the menu rendered on the screen.

Sometimes the menus comes back after clicking around on the menus. This may be linked to the fact that I keep getting a different gnome theme for the windows and panel, which also happens intermittently.

My experience is similar to John's experience from 12/17/2010

I had to log into the "Classic" desktop for Ubuntu 11.04 apply a few updates, then reboot a few times to try to get back into the "Default" desktop. At present the Unity bar and panel have returned, it's almost impossible to see wording and icons for the application indicators on the top right hand side of my screen.

I have an Acer Aspire 5516 laptop with 4GB of RAM, with ATI Radeon graphics, and the AMD Athlon 64 bit mobile processor. For some strange reason, the menus in both the panel and in applications (eg. Google Chrome) will not display. I can select the Application icon, but only by chance. I just cant see the menu option that I wish to select. This visual glitch showed up in the USB install for Ubuntu 11.04 on my USB flash drive.

Hey Didier. I'm assigning the bug to you first since it seems to depend a lot on how the session is managed first. Re-assign once it's clearer what kind of code change is required (if needed).

Ok, in this case, we need to determine what the GL problem is. Assigning to Jay. The solution may be to file a bug upstream once the driver issue is spotted and blacklist the broken systems while the issue is resolved.

With updates from 7.1.2010 i got the empty desktop back on my system. After login there is only the wallpaper and a movable hourglass. The classic desktop is working for me. Login at console was denied for root and user accounts, counts root and user together up to 5 tries.

Posted my problem (similar to the above) under #692905 I have not installed the AMD/ATI driver since I re-installed Natty yesterday, but still get all the same problems. It seems to me that there is a lot of common ground between #683065, #692905 and this bug. Can do any tests you want, but difficult to find a way of testing while the entire problem is around as desktop icons disappear and there is no way of getting a terminal to run without leaving the desktop as there are no menus either. All my hardware details are under #692905

EricDHH, have you tried with latest drivers and unity 3.6.0? Is this still an issue for you?

Same with 3.6.0 here. I also tried to find the cause in the runtime configuration by elimination through consecutive removal of possibly remotely related files , but found nothing. I must add this is an older Ubuntu installation going back to early 2008 and gradually upgraded to natty, so might well be some orphaned remnant of an older release outside my $HOME causing this.

I created a new user on this system and logged in - now the panel/launcher was visible and everything works, so there's probably still some configuration file in $HOME that I missed.

One of the problems is of course that many files get loaded at login and get "restored" to the filesystem at logout, even when nothing changed. I could rant about that horrible design flaw for hours, but instead I am resigning to simply remove files without logging into the desktop, and then logging out and back in to see if something changed. Without luck so far.

I also made a screenie of the problem as it is now.

Didier, I wonder if we shouldn't try to re-exec the "classic" desktop in
these cases?

@Mark: there is still one remaining case where we can have that until next release. In next release (Thursday), the test tool for both unity and the session handler will be exactly the same, so we shouldn't end up in those cases.
It was mentioned one week ago that on multiple crashes on compiz start, we should try to exec another session type. However, we can't switch back to another session type with the current implementation, as we need to integrate with the DM for that. I see no "safe and easy" way to do that in time for Natty. The test tool has a black llist for known "lying" on capability hardware.

I'm testing Natty on four machines. Each shows a different problem with
Compiz (I've reported them all). Of the four, only one is able to run
Unity properly, I love the Unity desktop, but I'm really worried ....

I haven't had any Unity or Compiz problems for a few days now, so it's
probably fixed. Congratulations.
