Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

After Empathy was updated the other day (to 2.32.1-0ubuntu1), I found that some operations, such as importing accounts from Pidgin, failed to work. Similarly, I could not create a new Facebook Chat account.

In both cases, there was no error, simply a silent failure: in the case of importing the accounts, having selected the accounts to import and clicked "Import" nothing happened; whereas when I tried to create a new account, nothing happened when I clicked on "Login".

Having logged out and back in, everything worked as normal.

I also installed telepathy-gabble (for Jabber & hence Facebook support) while Empathy was running.

So, it seems that either a) installing protocols while Empathy is running or b) updating Empathy while it is running causes problems.

Of course, I did try restarting Empathy, but this does not restart everything.

Some other programs, like Firefox, do not work properly if they are updated while running, but they at least print a warning. It would be good if Empathy at least did this, and of course even better if it could be fixed.

both these issue that you described have been happening for people in the past too so i dont think there are any regressions. facebook chat basically have problems for many people and the same stands on the pidgin import thingy.

@Omer it is possible I was unclear. Two important points:

1. The problems I described above only relate to running Empathy immediately after its packages have been updated. As I said above, logging out and back in solves all my problems. In particular, I have started using Empathy recently precisely because it now supports Facebook chat, and because import from Pidgin finally seems to work properly.

2. I reported these problems to Ubuntu rather than upstream because they are problems specific to updating the application, and the distro has more ways to mitigate or fix the problem than the upstream authors (e.g. apt could give a warning or automatically restart empathy when it is upgraded).

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance and sorry for the late response.

I have not had these problems again, but that is not a very useful thing to know, since I have not tried any of the same operations (importing from Pidgin, creating a Facebook account) again: I have been using Empathy steadily since then.
