Bug Description

Synaptic 0.57.8, Ubuntu 6.10

1. Mark Ubuntu's "lintian" package for installation.
2. Observe the "Mark additional required changes?" alert.
3. Unmark the lintian package.
4. Observe the "Mark additional required changes?" alert.

What happens: The two alerts appear exactly the same.

What should happen: Since the two alerts have exactly opposite purposes, they should be different. In particular, "To be installed" should change to "No longer to be installed".

I think you've got something here. I also notice that it doesn't unmark all packages it marked.

This is still happening in intrepid beta.

Still a problem with Ubuntu Karmic and synaptic 0.62.5ubuntu3.

The original package should be unmarked immediately, and the dialog should ask whether to keep or unmark the dependant marked packages. It may be helpful to implement this using the auto remove logic.

Changed in synaptic (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Medium
status: Confirmed → Triaged

When I mark a package with dependencies, (say 0AD, it asks me that dependecies are needed, and gives me "Mark" option) . Now when I realize I dont need that package, and go to it to unmark, it again says that the dependecies will be affected, and "Mark" them. This should be replace with Unmark them option, and probably another option, Leave the dependencies marked.

Another usecase of this bug is vlc-fluidsynth. Marking that once makes required download size = 137MB. Now unmarking that still has download size = 137 MB as it dependencies never got unmarked. There is absolutely no way to undo a mark except to manually go a track each and every dependency and unmark it.

Ctrl-z, if it was the last change made.
Still, should be an option.
