Bug Description

Hi all!

I'm about to by a laptop with a Realtek ALC883 chip (it happens to be one of the few decent laptops I can find that I can get without an OS), and I see that it can be a bit of a pain.

There is a thread at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=202555&page=5
that indicates that alsa 1.0.13, which was released a couple of months ago, has support for it, whereas the alsa in Edgy does not.

Therefore, a backport would be really nice to have! :-)

Builds in prevu, installs, and run without problems (at least for the moment ;))

+1 for me.

The kernel modules for alsa are in the kernel... your best bet is to talk to a kernel developer about getting the support for your chipset backported to Dapper/Edgy's kernel, which is certainly possible.

The backports team has no way of changing kernel module versions.... backporting the alsa package only backports the userland utilities, which is rather pointless :)

Changed in edgy-backports:
status: Unconfirmed → Rejected

Uh, right... But the alsa-source package, isn't that for compiling the
thing as a module? Could that be backported and used?

Cheers,

yes, but i don't want to upgrade everyone's user space. I recommend
using prevu to DIY :)
