Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Running Natty alpha with the latest partial upgrades on an HP5101 Mini notebook.
A wireless connection is properly established using driver brcm80211 (I deactivated the proprietary STA/wl driver manually). However as soon as I insert an Ethernet cable and the network connection switches to the Ethernet connection, the mouse cursor freezes. The on-off button doesn't bring up the shutdown menu any longer, but the only way to recover/shut down is to press the on-off button for a longer while.

If I disable the wireless network prior to inserting the Ethernet cable, there is no problem.
If I then remove the cable again and after that enable the wireless network, the switchover also works out well.

This problem didn't exist when running Maverick Meerkat on this same computer. I have done several installs of Natty Alpha after Meerkat, the last being a complete reinstallation with all settings removed from my home directory.

My reason for switching to Natty is that it incorporates a Broadcom wireless driver that works at high speed (130 Mb/s instead of just 2 Mb/s). The speed issue was indeed solved :-)

Thanks for asking!
I have diligently applied all updates since I installed the development
version. Today and yesterday there were no updates, which is very
uncommon, but as far as I understand, the installation should be
equivalent to a new installation of the current release version.

The problem has persisted all the way. I have tested it every now and then.
Within seconds from inserting an ethernet cable the mouse cursor and
everything else, keyboard, freezes and the only way to get out of this
is to press the on/off button for a long time and then switch the
mininotebook back on & restart Ubuntu.
Removing the ethernet cable doesn't clear the error condition.
If I switch off the wireless network in the applet menu, I can then plug
in the ethernet cable and the ethernet connection is made without
problems. I can switch back to wireless, too, so long as I remove the
cable before enabling the wireless interface again (in the applet menu).

What else can I say?

If you need any specific info about my machine which was not in the
original report, I can provide it. For Ubuntu internal data
please give an indication of the appropriate command as I don't know
these very well. I do know how to run them in a terminal window as root
etc.
The notebook is an HP 5101 with a Broadcom wireless card.
It is now using the latest Broadcom driver afaik. Before Natty Narwhal
under Ubuntu 10.10 I would not get any decent speed out of the wireless
card. This was ascribed to the driver. I tried to install the latest
driver, which necessitated a new kernel as well. On my other HP
notebook (an HP4515s) with Ubuntu 10.10 this went OK, but I seem to
remember it didn't work out so well on the mini notebook HP5101. (It is
a bit daunting, not having done any such compiling/binding or whatever
was necessary in Linux before.)
The installation problems on the mini notebook were probably why I
decided to install Natty before it was released. Now the wireless speed
is OK on both machines, being 117-130 Mb/s on a Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH
router with 802.11n enabled instead of just 2 Mb/s before. However, it
brought on this switchover problem on the mini notebook.

Thanks again!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in linux.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

Arjen Raateland, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please capture the oops following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Capturing_OOPs ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
