Bug Description

Using AMD64 Live CD Install (behavior evident in both Edgy & Feisty Herd 1).

Installer fails to detect Philips 170B display on GeForce 7100 PCIE graphics card.
Unable to configure the display (via System>Preferences>Screenresolution) to run at its native resolution and frequency. Maximum resolution is 1024x768 instead of 1280x1024. Frequency is 75hz not 60.

Installer configures xorg.conf with generic monitor & generic nVidia graphics card.

Manually editing xorg.conf enables the correct settings

The xserver-xorg maintainer scripts are responsible for monitor detection. Reassigning.

Here with feisty 20070201 on my PC :
05:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV43 [GeForce 6600] (rev a2)
and display : BELINEA 10 19 20 - 8 ms plugged in DVI port

dexconf create an xorg.conf with :
Section "Monitor"
 Identifier "Generic Monitor"
 Option "DPMS"
 HorizSync 28-51
 VertRefresh 43-60
EndSection

With that parameters i can't access 1200x1024 resolution because of wrong Hor/Vert values.

So if i launch control center to change resolution : nothing more than 1024x768 is offered
If i add "1200x1024" to the good section on xorg.conf, that tdo nothing too, because of wrong syncs values.

Changed in xorg:
status: Unconfirmed → Confirmed
importance: Undecided → Medium

I'v found my problem, may be it's a solution for you too Richie.

I use my monitor with the dvi port of my graphic card. Or vesa informations are carrying by the standard vga port, nor the dvi port in my case.

Changin the ports result in successfully detection of my screen parameters.

I remove my confirmation and ask for information like which kind of ports is used between screen and graphic card. And if it possible to change ports to confirm this bug.

Many people are reporting this same issue - Ubuntu's xorg installer is not detecting monitor h sync and v refresh rates correctly, leading to a variety of problems such as failing to select a correct resolution and refresh rate.

The work around is to manually set the h/v values in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file using values from your monitor's documentation. Feisty users can also try simply moving aside the xorg.conf file - Xorg itself is sometimes better at detecting your montor on the fly than the installer is.

A proper fix is going to take some additional research; meantime I'm grouping all these similar bugs as dupes.
