Bug Description

Using LiveCD .iso's for 6.10 and 6.06 downloaded earlier this month, 6.06, once configured using the Networking GUI, can use a brand new US Robotics Sportster on COM1 everytime activation is attempted.
With the same configuration, the LiveCD for version 6.10 will not interact with this hardware in any visible or audible way.

This is completely repeatable on my hardware - Dell Dimension XPS T450.

I read about the lack of support for soft-modems, and specifically bought an external hardware modem to use with this machine to get Linux/Ubuntu working.

In order for folks to get documentation, help, or updates, this NEEDS to be fixed.

did you try the modem after installing the system as well?

Not yet - I would like to install 6.10, but am not
sure this would be the best idea if I can't even get
on-line to download updates and packages!

Any other suggestions?
I specifically bought this new USR Sportster external
RS232 modem to be compatible with Linux, so I am a
(little) bit upset. Shame that USR won't let me use my
WinModem card, that I used for years in this machine,
under Linux.

I am hoping to install over the holidays on another
hard disk - I've got to install it first. I was hoping
to have that done by now, but my schedule was thrown
off by this inability get on-line.

I've go DSL coming in a few weeks, and I would like to
get Ubuntu up and working as a known quantity BEFORE
putting the machine on an "always on" internet
connection.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Oh, and Merry Christmas (or Happy Holidays).

Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
